How should I store and maintain a shirasaya nodachi long-term?
Updated Feb 2026
Long-term storage of a shirasaya nodachi requires consistent attention to moisture and oxidation. The blade should be lightly coated with a neutral sword oil - choji oil or a food-grade mineral oil alternative works well - reapplied every two to three months depending on your climate. In humid environments, silica gel packets placed near the storage area help prevent rust. The wooden saya should never be stored in an airtight sealed case without ventilation, as trapped moisture accelerates both blade oxidation and wood warping. Lay the sword horizontally on a padded rack rather than standing it vertically on the tip, which over time can stress the point geometry. When handling, cotton gloves prevent fingerprint acids from etching the polished surface.
