How should I maintain the black finish on a carbon steel blade?

 Updated Feb 2026

Carbon steel is reactive to moisture and skin oils, so periodic maintenance keeps your replica looking its best. After handling the blade, wipe it down with a soft microfiber cloth to remove fingerprints. Every two to three months, apply a thin layer of food-grade mineral oil or traditional choji oil along the entire blade surface using a lint-free cloth, then buff away excess. Store the sword in its scabbard or on an indoor rack away from direct sunlight and high humidity. If you live in a coastal or tropical climate, consider adding a silica gel packet near your display area. Avoid abrasive polishes or chemical solvents, as these can strip the dark coating and expose raw steel to accelerated oxidation.
