How should I care for and display a Shusui Katana replica?
Updated Feb 2026
Store or display the Shusui horizontally on a katana stand with the edge facing upward, which is the traditional resting orientation and prevents the blade from pressing against the interior of the saya over time. Keep it in a climate-controlled environment away from direct sunlight, as UV exposure can fade the lacquer on the saya and tsuka wrapping. Apply a light coat of choji oil or mineral oil to the blade every two to three months using a soft flannel cloth, paying extra attention to the hamon line where the black finish meets polished steel. If you live in a humid region, consider adding a small silica gel packet near your display to absorb excess moisture and prevent surface oxidation.
