What makes the Shusui blade black compared to other Zoro swords?
Updated Feb 2026
In the One Piece storyline, Shusui is classified as a black blade — a rare distinction indicating that the sword has been permanently hardened through decades of use by powerful swordsmen, most notably Ryuma of Wano Country. Our replicas recreate this by applying a deep black oxide-style finish along the entire blade surface, contrasting sharply with the polished hamon line near the edge. This is fundamentally different from the bright polished steel on Wado Ichimonji or the conventionally finished Sandai Kitetsu. The black coating also serves a practical purpose for display, as it resists fingerprints and light surface oxidation better than raw polished carbon steel, making the replica easier to maintain over time.
