Is 1045 carbon steel a good choice for a display katana replica?

 Updated Feb 2026

For display and collectible purposes, 1045 carbon steel is an excellent material choice. It offers enough hardness to take and hold a well-defined edge geometry — important for visual authenticity — while remaining workable enough for smiths to shape accurate blade profiles with proper curvature and taper. Unlike stainless steel, which can appear flat and industrial under display lighting, carbon steel develops a subtle depth of tone that reads more convincingly as a traditionally forged blade. The trade-off is that carbon steel requires light periodic oiling to prevent rust, which is a straightforward maintenance step any collector can manage.
