Frequently Asked Questions

What is a dao sword?
The dao is a single-edged Chinese sword, typically with a slight curve, designed primarily for chopping and slashing cuts. It is one of the four traditional Chinese weapons and was the standard military sidearm throughout Chinese history. The term dao encompasses many subtypes varying by era and purpose.
What is the difference between a dao and a jian?
The dao is single-edged and often curved, optimized for powerful cutting strokes. The jian is double-edged and straight, designed for thrusting and precise cuts. The dao was the common soldier’s blade while the jian was associated with nobility and scholars.
What styles of dao are available?
Our collection includes the willow-leaf dao (liuyedao), the broad-bladed zhanmadao, Han dynasty ring-pommel dao, and other historical variants. Each style reflects a different era and military application in Chinese sword history.
How does a Chinese dao compare to a Japanese katana?
Both are single-edged curved swords, but they developed independently. The katana typically has more curvature near the hilt, while dao curvature varies by type. Chinese dao often feature disc guards and ring pommels, while katanas use tsuba guards and cord-wrapped handles. Both traditions produce excellent cutting swords.

Absolutely Outstanding Work! It looks even more beautiful in person. As for me, It was a bizarre Christmas gift.

The blade is pretty sharp and it's heavy which I wasn't really expect it to be though I like it very much. Though, I don't think it's that durable if you swing it (Slash) but it can still cut so be careful.

I think my only takeway from this is that, the scabbard was a bit worn out I suppose. The sew was kind of loose and inside was leaving crumbs of wood/dust on the blade (It sticked to it due to the oil). I guess that's to be expected since they had it in stock, probably one that's been there for some time. Additionally, the time of shipping takes quite an amount of time but eventually it still came. Just make your orders about 2 weeks and a half earlier from when you'd want to recieve it (if from the US) because that's how long it took for me.
