How should I store and maintain a tanto or wakizashi for long-term display?

Carbon steel blades — including 1045, 1060, and Damascus variants — require a light coat of blade oil (choji oil or a quality mineral oil) applied every few months to prevent oxidation, especially in humid environments. Store the blade in its saya with the edge facing upward in a horizontal position on a sword stand, which prevents the oil from pooling unevenly and keeps pressure off the habaki (blade collar). Avoid storing in airtight cases without desiccant packets, as trapped humidity accelerates surface rust. When handling for display or inspection, wear clean cotton gloves — fingerprint oils are mildly acidic and will leave faint etch marks on polished carbon steel over time. A soft polishing cloth (uchiko powder cloth for traditional cleaning) helps restore surface luster without scratching the finish.
