How do I maintain white ito wrapping to keep it clean over extended display?
Updated Feb 2026
White ito wrapping requires specific attention to cleanliness because the light color shows fingerprint oils, dust, and atmospheric contamination more visibly than darker ito colors. The primary maintenance recommendation is to minimize direct contact with the ito during handling - grip the scabbard when moving the sword and hold the tsuka only when necessary. For display, positioning the sword with the handle away from traffic patterns minimizes incidental contact. Dust can be carefully removed from white ito with a very soft, clean brush drawn gently along the wrapping direction. Light soiling can be addressed with a barely-dampened clean cloth applied very carefully to the ito surface, followed by thorough drying. Avoid oil application to the ito itself - oil used for blade maintenance should be kept away from the handle wrapping. With careful handling and periodic gentle cleaning, white ito maintains its appearance well over extended display periods.
