Does the blue blade treatment affect the underlying steel quality?
Updated Feb 2026
Blue blade treatment is a surface-level process that does not affect the underlying steel's metallurgical properties, heat treatment, or full-tang construction. The blue color sits as a very thin surface layer on the already-hardened and polished blade. The blade beneath the treatment has been properly heat-treated to the appropriate hardness before the color process is applied - the treatment adds the aesthetic element without modifying the grain structure or hardness achieved during heat treatment. The treatment does create a surface that requires specific maintenance awareness: the blue layer should be protected with camellia or mineral oil after handling, and abrasive contact should be avoided as it will damage the color layer. With appropriate care, the blue treatment maintains its color quality over extended display periods.
