What steel grades produce the best blue blade coloring?
Updated Feb 2026
Manganese Steel produces the most vivid and consistently saturated blue blade coloring of any steel grade used in Japanese sword construction. Its exceptional surface hardness - significantly harder than standard carbon steel grades - means the surface quality after polishing is superior, and the blue treatment adheres with greater uniformity and depth. T10 carbon steel also accepts blue treatment well, and the combination of the T10 hamon visible beneath the blue treatment creates a particularly distinctive multi-element visual surface. 1095 carbon steel produces adequate blue treatment quality at its tier. Standard 1045 or 1060 carbon steel grades accept blue treatment but the lower surface quality results in less uniform color compared to Manganese Steel pieces. For the most vivid and uniform blue blade result, Manganese Steel is the first choice.
