What is an iaito and how does it differ from a live carbon steel katana?

 Updated Feb 2026

An iaito is a practice sword designed for Japanese sword art training - specifically for iaido, the art of drawing and resheathing movements, and for kata practice of Japanese sword forms. The primary difference from a live carbon steel katana is the blade material and edge treatment: iaito use aluminum alloy or zinc-aluminum alloy blades that are completely unsharpened. The aluminum blade replicates the weight and balance of a carbon steel katana closely enough for authentic practice feeling while eliminating the edge hazard of a sharpened blade. This makes iaito suitable for continuous repetitive practice movements that would be unsafe with a live edge blade. The visual appearance and proportions of a iaito are typically identical to a full-size katana.
