How should Damascus steel tanto be cared for and stored?
Updated Feb 2026
Damascus steel tanto require consistent oil maintenance that specifically addresses the layered grain boundaries of the fold-forged construction. After every handling session, wipe the complete blade with a soft lint-free cloth, then apply a thin coat of camellia or mineral oil across the full blade surface. Work the oil gently into the textured boundaries between steel layers - these grain boundaries have more surface area than flat steel and can accumulate moisture and oxidation more readily if not oiled. Never use abrasive materials or polishing compounds on a Damascus tanto blade - the layered surface pattern is the defining quality of the piece and any abrasion damages the visual record of the construction. Store in the tanto scabbard in stable humidity. If the etched surface dulls significantly over years of display, professional re-etching can refresh the pattern - this is the appropriate restoration approach rather than any surface abrasive treatment.
