How should I care for the red color treatment on a full tang katana blade?

 Updated Feb 2026

Caring for a red blade treatment requires protecting both the carbon steel beneath and the color surface. After every handling session, wipe the full blade surface with a soft lint-free cloth to remove fingerprints - the acids in skin contact affect color treatments over time if not promptly removed. Apply a very thin coat of camellia or mineral oil using a soft cloth with light pressure, covering the complete blade surface and buffing away excess. Never use metal polishing compounds, abrasive pads, or chemical solvents on a color-treated blade - these will damage or remove the treatment. For Manganese Steel red blades, the high surface hardness provides additional resistance to minor contact, but the same gentle routine applies. Store in stable humidity away from direct sunlight and temperature extremes.
