How does the yellow blade color treatment affect the blade's appearance over time?
Updated Feb 2026
Yellow blade color treatments on high-carbon steel are surface finishes that require appropriate care to maintain their appearance over time. The primary threat to a yellow blade treatment is abrasion from improper cleaning materials - any abrasive cloth, polishing compound, or rough surface contact will gradually remove the color treatment from the steel surface beneath. The secondary threat is UV exposure from direct sunlight, which can cause yellow color treatments to fade or shift in tone over months of sustained exposure. The third consideration is the underlying carbon steel: even with a yellow color treatment, the high-carbon steel blade will develop surface oxidation if not properly oiled after handling. Regular oiling with camellia oil or mineral oil applied with a soft cloth and buffed away protects the steel while leaving a very thin protective layer over the yellow treatment surface. With proper care - soft cloths only, no abrasives, regular oiling, storage out of direct sunlight - a yellow blade treatment maintains its color quality for years.
