What steel grades are used in Chinese miao dao collectibles?
Updated Feb 2026
Chinese miao dao collectibles in this collection use high-carbon steel grades appropriate to the extended blade forms. 1095 carbon steel is used in the oxtail dao pieces, providing premium high-carbon composition with approximately 0.95% carbon content for significant blade hardness and excellent surface quality across the extended blade length. Damascus steel miao dao pieces bring fold-forged layered patterning to the extended Chinese saber format - the larger blade surface of a miao dao allows the Damascus patterns to be displayed at a scale that shorter formats cannot provide, with more of the layered pattern visible simultaneously. The Kangxi Chop Saber pieces use the same high-carbon construction standards. Full-tang construction is maintained across all grades, with the blade steel running from kissaki tip through the complete two-handed handle assembly. The extended blade length of miao dao forms requires particular attention to construction quality to ensure that the steel maintains consistent properties across the full blade length.
