What is the difference between a short blade katana and a standard katana?
Updated Feb 2026
The primary difference between a short blade katana and a standard katana is blade length, with all other design elements remaining essentially consistent between the two forms. A standard katana has a blade length of approximately twenty-seven to thirty inches and an overall length of thirty-eight to forty-two inches. A short blade katana reduces the blade to approximately twelve to twenty-four inches while maintaining the same curved single-edged profile, tsuba guard, ito-wrapped handle, and matching lacquered scabbard. In collecting terms, the shorter blade changes several practical aspects of the piece: it requires less display clearance, fits standard display hardware more easily, and handles more comfortably for close inspection. In historical Japanese context, the short blade katana length corresponds to the wakizashi category - the companion blade of the samurai daisho pair. The katana fittings and overall aesthetic presentation remain fully intact at the shorter blade length.
