What metal components are in a high-quality short sword?
Updated Feb 2026
A high-quality metal short sword is built with several distinct metal components that collectively contribute to both the piece's visual character and its structural integrity. The blade itself is the most significant component: forged from high-carbon steel in grades like 1045, T10, or Manganese Steel, heat-treated to the appropriate hardness, and ground and polished to the finished blade profile. The habaki is the metal collar that fits precisely over the base of the blade and seats into the scabbard mouth - a well-fitted habaki is critical to how securely the blade rests in the scabbard and protects the blade base from wear. The tsuba is the hand guard, traditionally made in metal with a variety of decorative and functional designs, and the seppa are the metal spacers that fit above and below the tsuba to hold it in place. The mekugi is the metal or bamboo pin that passes through the handle and blade tang to secure the handle assembly. On a shirasaya tanto, only the habaki remains as a metal component - all other fittings are wood - making the habaki's quality even more apparent in that minimal presentation.
