What are the Kitetsu swords and what is their significance in One Piece?
Updated Feb 2026
The Kitetsu are a lineage of three cursed swords in One Piece, each believed to bring misfortune and death to their wielders due to a curse placed during their forging. The three Kitetsu are ranked by grade: Shodai Kitetsu is the highest grade and has not appeared as a named character sword in the main story, Nidai Kitetsu is the second grade and was used by Monkey D. Luffy briefly in Wano, and Sandai Kitetsu is the third and lowest grade - the one Roronoa Zoro claimed at Loguetown in one of the series' most famous scenes. Zoro's claim of the Sandai Kitetsu involved tossing the blade into the air and holding out his arm, daring the curse to take it - when the blade missed, it established both his luck and his fearless character. Despite the curse, Zoro continued carrying the Sandai Kitetsu throughout most of the series, treating the curse as an irrelevant detail for a swordsman of his caliber.
