What is a shikomizue and how does it differ from a standard straight sword?
Updated Feb 2026
A shikomizue is a concealed sword - a straight blade housed inside a staff, cane, or bamboo-pattern outer casing rather than a conventional sword scabbard. The word combines shikomi, meaning hidden or concealed, with zue, meaning staff or cane. In Japanese martial history, concealed weapons of this type were used when carrying a visible sword would be prohibited or inadvisable. The bamboo-style shikomizue in this collection presents the sword as a bamboo staff in appearance, with the blade concealed inside. The sword is drawn by separating the two sections of the outer casing to reveal the blade below. As a display collectible, the shikomizue is a distinctive conversation piece - it presents as a bamboo staff until the concealment is demonstrated. The straight blade inside follows the same construction standards as the standard ninjato pieces in the collection: the same steel options, the same full-tang construction where applicable, and the same care requirements for the blade under its concealment.
