Can a wooden katana holder support a heavy odachi or nodachi sword?
Updated Feb 2026
The katana holders in this collection are sized and built for swords in the standard katana length and weight range - overall length of 95 to 110 centimeters and total weight including saya of approximately 800 grams to 1.5 kilograms. Odachi and nodachi swords are considerably longer and heavier: a standard odachi may be 130 to 160 centimeters overall and weigh 2 kilograms or more. A standard katana holder may not provide adequate support for a sword of this size for two reasons: the peg spacing may not align with the odachi's balance point, leaving the sword tip unsupported, and the overall length may overhang the stand by a significant amount. The structural load capacity of the stand is sufficient for the weight, but the geometry may not work. For long swords, a floor stand with adjustable bracket positions or a wall-mount system with adjustable pegs provides better support and more flexibility to match the sword's specific length and balance point.
