Are gold samurai swords built to the same structural standard as regular katana?
Updated Feb 2026
Yes. The gold blade color is a surface finish applied to properly forged and heat-treated carbon steel. The underlying construction - steel grade, heat treatment, full-tang build, handle materials, and fittings - follows the same standards as the other hand-forged swords in our catalog. The swords are made from manganese steel or 1045 carbon steel, both of which are appropriate materials for a functional display collectible. Full-tang construction means the steel runs unbroken from blade tip through the handle, secured with mekugi pins in the traditional manner. The handle uses ray skin and ito wrapping over a fitted wooden core, and the saya is individually fitted to each blade. The visual treatment is an addition to a properly built sword, not a substitute for quality construction.
