Are the long samurai swords in this collection functional or purely for display?
Updated Feb 2026
The swords in this collection are built as functional collectibles - hand-forged from genuine carbon steel with full-tang construction and proper heat treatment. They are not decorative wall hangers with cosmetic blades. The T10 clay-tempered and Damascus swords in particular are made to the same structural standards as shorter katana intended for display and light handling. That said, tachi and odachi swords of this length are not practical for most forms of test cutting or sword practice due to their size and the specific techniques required to handle them safely. They are best understood as display-quality pieces that happen to be built to real construction standards, rather than practice or cutting tools. If you intend to handle the sword beyond occasional examination, a shorter katana from our Japanese katana collection would be more appropriate for that purpose.
