What makes a samurai sword functional-grade versus display-grade?

 Updated Feb 2026

Functional-grade samurai swords are distinguished by three factors: premium steel selection (T10, 1095, 1060, or Damascus), differential clay tempering that creates a genuinely hardened cutting edge, and full-tang construction with properly fitted traditional hardware. Display-grade pieces may use lower-carbon steels like 1045, skip clay tempering, or use simplified fitting assembly. The functional-grade designation indicates that no shortcuts were taken in materials or construction — the blade is built to the same structural standards as historical samurai swords. For collectors, this translates to higher visual quality (more vivid hamon, cleaner polish), better material integrity, and premium fittings throughout.
