The daisho is the paired sword set consisting of a katana (long sword) and a wakizashi (companion sword). During the Edo period (1603–1868), carrying the daisho was legally restricted to the samurai class, making it the most visible marker of warrior status. The katana served as the primary weapon, while the wakizashi was used in close-quarters situations, for indoor encounters where a long sword was impractical, and as a sidearm when the katana was set aside (as etiquette required when entering another’s home). For modern collectors, a matched daisho set — with both swords in the same steel type, saya color, and tsuba style — is one of the most impressive display configurations, traditionally shown on a two-tier horizontal stand.
