What construction features make a katana sword suitable for cutting practice?

 Updated Feb 2026

Several structural elements separate a functional katana sword from a display-only piece. Full-tang construction is the most critical — the blade steel must extend through the entire handle and be secured with bamboo mekugi pins. The blade must be forged from high-carbon steel with proper heat treatment to achieve a hard edge and tough spine. The handle wrapping must be tight enough to absorb repeated impact without loosening. The blade geometry needs the correct edge angle and distal taper for clean cutting. Display-only katana swords often use stainless steel, partial tang, and decorative fittings that would fail under cutting stress.
