How do I choose between T10, 1060, and 1095 for a functional katana?

 Updated Feb 2026

Each steel serves a different priority. T10 is the best all-rounder — its tungsten content provides excellent edge retention while maintaining good toughness, and it produces a dramatic hamon temper line. Choose T10 if you want one katana that performs well across all use cases. 1060 is the toughest option — it resists chipping and bending better than any other steel in the lineup. Choose 1060 if durability is your top priority or if you are still refining your cutting technique. 1095 achieves the hardest edge and sharpest geometry, ideal for precise, thin cuts on soft targets. Choose 1095 if you have confident technique and want the finest possible cutting performance.
