Do authentic Japanese katana require special care compared to decorative replicas?
Updated Feb 2026
Authentic katana made from high-carbon steel do require regular maintenance that stainless or decorative replicas do not. High-carbon steel is susceptible to surface oxidation, so the blade should be wiped with a light coat of choji oil every two to three months, or more frequently in humid climates. Handle the blade only with a clean cloth or gloves, as fingerprints deposit salts and moisture that can etch the surface. Store the katana in its saya in a dry environment, ideally displayed horizontally. If the blade develops minor surface spots, a gentle wipe with a lightly oiled cloth will remove them. This maintenance routine takes only a few minutes and ensures the blade stays in display condition for decades.
