Can spring steel katana produce hamon temper lines?
Updated Feb 2026
Spring steel does not typically produce visible hamon through clay tempering. The alloying elements that provide toughness also modify the steel’s response to differential heat treatment, making the hard-soft boundary less visually distinct than on T10 or 1095. Some spring steel blades may show a faint hamon with careful polishing, but it will not have the dramatic visibility of T10 hamon. If hamon is an important visual feature for your collection, T10 is a better choice. If structural toughness is your priority and hamon is secondary, spring steel delivers its strength advantage clearly.
