Does sharpness matter for a tanto I only plan to display?
Updated Feb 2026
For display-only collectors, sharpness serves as a quality indicator rather than a functional requirement. A sharp edge confirms that the blade’s steel was properly heat-treated (poorly treated steel cannot hold a sharp edge), that the edge geometry was correctly forged, and that the finishing process was thorough. A sharp tanto on display also carries more authentic presence — it is a complete blade in its finished state rather than an unfinished object. The sharpness does require appropriate display practice: keep the scabbard on when not actively examining the blade, and position the display away from areas where accidental contact might occur.
