How should collectors care for folded steel blades to preserve the visible grain patterns over time?
Updated Feb 2026
The grain patterns on folded steel are inherent to the steel’s structure and cannot be rubbed away through normal care. However, proper maintenance preserves the grain’s visibility and clarity. Regular oiling with choji or mineral oil prevents corrosion that could obscure the grain surface. When oiling, use gentle straight strokes along the blade length rather than circular motions. Avoid aggressive polishing compounds or abrasives that could gradually smooth the subtle surface topography that makes the grain visible. If the blade develops light surface corrosion, address it with oil and a soft cloth rather than abrasive cleaning. The grain patterns actually become more visible and refined over years of proper maintenance as the blade develops a subtle patina that enhances the contrast between layers.
