What are the key dimensional differences between odachi and standard katana, and why does it matter
Updated Feb 2026
Standard katana typically feature blade lengths between 60 and 80 centimeters with overall lengths around 100 to 110 centimeters. Odachi dramatically exceed these dimensions, with blade lengths starting around 90 centimeters and reaching 150 centimeters or more, creating overall lengths that can exceed 180 centimeters — taller than many adults. This dimensional difference matters enormously for display planning. Standard katana stands and wall mounts will not accommodate odachi. You need either oversized horizontal wall brackets rated for the greater weight, or purpose-built floor-standing display solutions. The visual impact also scales dramatically — where a standard katana serves as one element in a display arrangement, a single odachi can command an entire room’s attention. Measure your intended display space carefully before purchasing, and consider that odachi look most impressive when given adequate surrounding negative space rather than being crowded among smaller pieces.
