What is the best way to display and maintain a Koi Saya Wakizashi?
Updated Mar 2026
For display, a horizontal sword stand that supports the blade without pressure on the saya's painted surface is ideal. Avoid positioning the piece in direct sunlight, as prolonged UV exposure can fade hand-applied pigments on the lacquered saya over time. The blade itself should be lightly coated with a thin layer of choji oil or food-grade mineral oil every few months to prevent surface oxidation, especially in humid climates. When handling, cotton or nitrile gloves protect the steel from fingerprint oils and keep the painted saya surface free of smudges. Store in a low-humidity environment when not on display.
