How should I care for a white koshirae katana in long-term display?
Updated Mar 2026
White koshirae requires slightly more maintenance than darker-finished pieces because light lacquer and pale ito reveal dust and finger oils more visibly. Place the sword on a horizontal display stand in a room with stable humidity between 40-60% and away from direct sunlight, which can yellow white lacquer over time. For the blade, apply a thin coat of choji oil every two to three months using a soft cloth, wiping from the habaki toward the tip to avoid cutting the cloth. Handle the saya only with clean, dry hands or cotton gloves. Avoid storing the blade inside the saya for extended periods in humid climates, as trapped moisture can cause surface oxidation on the steel.
