How is the black finish on these ninjato blades created?

 Updated Mar 2026

The black finish on 1095 carbon steel ninjato is typically achieved through one of two methods: controlled heat treatment during the forging process, which produces a dark oxidized surface layer, or a chemical blackening process applied after polishing. Both techniques create a visually striking matte or semi-gloss appearance that differs from painted coatings - the color is a property of the steel surface itself rather than a film applied on top. Beyond aesthetics, this oxidized layer offers mild corrosion resistance, which is particularly useful for display pieces mounted in open-air environments. It will not eliminate the need for occasional light oiling, but it does reduce the frequency of maintenance compared to a fully polished bare-steel blade.
