How should I care for the lacquered saya to prevent cracking?
Updated Mar 2026
Lacquered wood is sensitive to two main environmental threats: direct UV exposure and fluctuating humidity. Prolonged sunlight will fade pigment and cause the lacquer surface to yellow or flake over time. Rapid humidity changes—common in rooms with forced-air heating—cause the wooden core to expand and contract, eventually cracking the lacquer coating. Store your flame saya in a stable environment between 40–60% relative humidity, away from windows and vents. If displaying on a wall rack, avoid exterior walls in cold climates. Occasional light buffing with a soft, dry cloth removes dust without abrading the finish.
