What should I know about caring for a leather-wrapped saya?
Updated Mar 2026
Leather saya require slightly different care than lacquered scabbards. Every three to six months, apply a thin coat of quality leather conditioner to prevent the hide from drying out or cracking, especially in low-humidity environments. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which can fade and brittle the leather over time. Store the katana horizontally or blade-up on a display stand rather than in a closed bag, which can trap humidity and promote mold on both the leather and the blade. Keep the carbon steel blade lightly oiled with choji or mineral oil to prevent oxidation—T10's high carbon content makes it more reactive to moisture than stainless alternatives.
