How should I care for and store a beige handle wakizashi display piece?
Updated Mar 2026
Proper storage preserves both the blade and the delicate ito wrapping. Keep the wakizashi horizontally on a dedicated sword stand or inside a display case away from direct sunlight, which can fade beige ito and discolor lacquered saya over time. Apply a light coat of choji oil or food-grade mineral oil to the blade every two to three months using a soft cotton cloth to prevent surface oxidation — particularly important in humid climates. Avoid touching the blade surface with bare hands, as skin oils accelerate tarnishing. For the beige ito itself, dust gently with a dry, soft brush rather than using any liquid cleaner, which can cause the cord to shrink or discolor. Store in a low-humidity environment; silica gel packets inside a display case help maintain stable conditions year-round.
