How should I store a red lacquer saya to prevent finish damage?

 Updated Mar 2026

Red lacquer - whether piano gloss or crackle finish - is durable under stable conditions but sensitive to two main threats: prolonged UV exposure and extreme humidity swings. Display in direct sunlight will cause the red pigment to fade noticeably over time, so positioning the sword away from windows or using UV-filtering display cases is strongly recommended. Humidity fluctuations can cause the underlying hardwood core of the saya to expand and contract, potentially stressing the lacquer and causing micro-cracks. Storing or displaying the sword in an environment maintained between 40-60% relative humidity is ideal. When not on display, wrapping the saya in a soft cloth and storing it horizontally in a wooden sword bag provides additional protection against dust and accidental contact scratches.
