How should I store a T10 tanto to prevent corrosion?
Updated Mar 2026
High-carbon steels like T10 are not stainless and will oxidize if neglected. For long-term display storage, apply a thin coat of choji oil (traditional clove-based sword oil) or a modern equivalent such as Renaissance Wax to all exposed metal surfaces, including the blade, habaki, and any carbon-steel fittings. Re-oil every three to six months, or more frequently in humid coastal environments. Store the tanto horizontally on a sword stand rather than vertically in its saya for extended periods — standing blade-down concentrates oil at the tip and can trap moisture near the habaki. Avoid touching the blade surface with bare hands, as skin oils accelerate oxidation. A climate-controlled room with relative humidity between 40–55% is ideal. If the blade develops light surface rust (not pitting), it can be carefully removed with a soft uchiko powder ball, followed by fresh oil.
