How does folded steel compare to T10 or 1095 high-carbon steel?
Updated Mar 2026
T10 and 1095 are specific high-carbon steel grades prized for their predictable, consistent composition straight from the mill. They are excellent choices for performance-oriented katana and are commonly paired with clay tempering to create a hamon (temper line). Folded steel, by contrast, begins as raw or semi-refined steel that is refined through the forging process itself - the folding acts as a purification and homogenization step. The trade-off is that folded steel showcases visible layered aesthetics that T10 or 1095 blades typically lack, making it especially appealing as a display collectible where surface character matters. Some folded katana in this collection also incorporate clay tempering, combining both traditions for collectors who want the grain pattern and the hamon.
