How should I store and maintain a high-carbon steel display sword?
Updated Mar 2026
High-carbon steel requires basic but consistent care to prevent surface rust and maintain its finish. After handling, wipe the blade down with a soft, lint-free cloth to remove fingerprints and skin oils, which are the most common cause of surface oxidation. Every two to three months, apply a thin, even coat of choji oil or food-grade mineral oil and buff off the excess — you want a barely-there protective film, not a visible slick. Store the sword horizontally in its saya to keep pressure off the edge geometry, and choose a display location away from high-humidity areas like bathrooms or exterior walls. If you live in a coastal or humid climate, a silica gel packet inside a display case can make a meaningful difference in long-term preservation.
