How should I store and maintain a display ninjato long-term?
Updated Mar 2026
Carbon and tool steel blades require periodic maintenance even when kept purely for display. Apply a thin, even coat of camellia oil (choji oil) to the blade every three to four months - this forms a protective barrier against humidity-driven oxidation. When handling the blade during maintenance, use a lint-free cloth or cotton gloves to avoid transferring skin oils, which can create uneven patina over time. Store the ninjato horizontally or at a low angle; vertical storage with the edge upward can cause oil to pool unevenly. Avoid display locations with direct sunlight, which fades lacquered sayas and can cause wood handles to dry and crack. Lacquered sayas benefit from occasional light conditioning with a dry cloth to preserve their finish. Manganese steel blades are the most forgiving of variable conditions, but no carbon steel should be stored long-term without some protective oil coating.
