How should I store and maintain this display sword?

 Updated Mar 2026

1045 carbon steel requires routine maintenance to remain in optimal display condition, particularly in environments with variable humidity. The most important step is applying a thin coat of food-grade mineral oil or dedicated sword oil to the blade surface every one to three months, depending on ambient humidity levels. This creates a barrier against oxidation without affecting the blade's appearance. Storage should be in a dry, stable environment - avoid basements or unventilated spaces where moisture can accumulate. If displayed horizontally on wall mounts, the blade should rest edge-side up to prevent oil from pooling unevenly along one side. For long-term storage, a padded sword bag adds an additional layer of protection against airborne particulates.
