How should I care for a carbon steel Zanpakuto collectible?

 Updated Mar 2026

Carbon steel requires more attentive maintenance than stainless steel, but the process is straightforward. After any handling, wipe the blade with a clean, lint-free cloth to remove fingerprint oils, which are acidic enough to initiate surface rust. Apply a thin layer of choji oil, mineral oil, or Renaissance Wax every one to three months depending on your climate - more frequently in coastal or humid environments. Store the blade in its saya when not displayed, and avoid airtight cases without a silica gel desiccant packet. Never use water to clean carbon steel. For replicas with specialty finishes like matte black or white lacquered blades, test any cleaning product on a small, inconspicuous area before full application.
