How should I oil and store a 1045 carbon steel Aikuchi?

 Updated Mar 2026

Apply a very thin, even coat of camellia oil (choji oil) to the blade surface every three to six months using a soft, lint-free cloth or a traditional nugui-gami rice paper. Less is more - excess oil can pool inside the saya and attract dust. Always store the Aikuchi in its saya when not on active display, as the close-fitting wooden scabbard limits air circulation around the steel. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and areas with fluctuating humidity, such as near windows or heating vents. If you live in a coastal or high-humidity region, a silica gel packet placed near the display stand offers additional protection. Never store the blade in a leather-lined case for extended periods, as leather retains moisture and acids that accelerate oxidation.
