What maintenance does a white piano lacquer saya need?

 Updated Feb 2026

White piano lacquer is durable and moisture-resistant, but it shows fingerprints, dust, and minor scuffs more visibly than darker finishes. After handling, wipe the saya with a clean, dry microfiber cloth to remove oils from skin contact. For deeper cleaning, a slightly damp cloth followed by immediate drying works well — avoid solvents or abrasive cleaners, which can dull or scratch the lacquer surface. Store the sword away from direct sunlight, as prolonged UV exposure can yellow white lacquer over time. Keeping the saya in a sword bag or padded display case when not exhibited adds an extra layer of protection. For the blade itself, apply a thin coat of choji oil every few weeks and after any handling to prevent oxidation, especially along the edge where the steel is hardest and most reactive.
