How should I maintain a display anime sword long-term?
Updated Feb 2026
For carbon steel blades kept in display conditions, a light application of camellia oil or mineral oil every three to four months is sufficient to prevent surface oxidation. Use a soft, lint-free cloth and apply the oil in the direction of the grain. Avoid fingerprints on the blade after cleaning, as skin oils accelerate surface spotting — handle the blade with cotton gloves when repositioning. The saya (scabbard) should be inspected periodically; lacquered wood sayas can develop hairline cracks in very dry environments, so storing the piece in a room with moderate humidity (around 45–55%) is ideal. Do not store carbon steel blades sheathed for extended periods in humid climates without periodic airing.
