How should I store and maintain a carbon-steel military sword replica?

 Updated Feb 2026

Carbon steel is reactive to moisture and skin oils, so routine care is important for long-term display quality. After handling, wipe the blade down with a clean, lint-free cloth to remove fingerprints, then apply a very thin layer of choji oil, mineral oil, or a purpose-made sword oil using a soft cloth or maintenance kit. Store the sword in its saya horizontally or at a slight downward angle toward the tip — this allows any residual oil to distribute evenly and prevents pooling at the habaki. Keep the display environment stable: avoid areas with high humidity, temperature swings, or direct sunlight, all of which can accelerate oxidation and damage organic handle materials like leather, ray skin, and silk ito wrap. Leather saya should be conditioned annually with a pH-neutral leather conditioner to prevent drying and cracking.
