How should I maintain a carbon steel manga katana in long-term storage?
Updated Feb 2026
Carbon steel requires periodic maintenance to prevent surface oxidation, especially in humid environments. For long-term display or storage, apply a thin, even coat of blade oil (traditional choji oil or a modern mineral alternative) to the blade surface every two to three months. Use a clean, lint-free cloth to apply and then lightly buff the surface — you want a protective layer, not a pooling residue. Store the sword horizontally on a display stand or in its scabbard, edge facing upward in the traditional Japanese orientation. Avoid storing carbon steel katanas in sealed leather sheaths for extended periods, as leather can trap moisture against the blade. For replicas with color-treated blades, such as the Nichirin series or the blue-blade Ghost of Tsushima pieces, keep them away from prolonged direct sunlight, which can gradually fade surface treatments over time.
