Frequently Asked Questions

What wood types are used in these sword stands?
The stands in this collection are crafted from solid natural hardwood, which offers greater density and durability than engineered wood alternatives like MDF or plywood. Natural hardwood provides a stable, non-compressible surface that holds its shape under the weight of full-length katana over long display periods. The grain patterns and tonal variations in real wood also mean no two stands are visually identical, which many collectors appreciate as part of the character of a handmade piece. Finishes range from natural clear-coat, which preserves the warm amber tones of the raw wood, to black lacquer, which gives the stand a more formal, gallery-display appearance.
How do I choose between a single, double, or three-layer stand?
The tier count should reflect both your current display intent and your collecting trajectory. A single-layer stand is the right choice when you want one blade to be the uninterrupted focal point of a display — a gifted katana, a signed piece, or a thematically significant sword. A double-tier stand suits collectors displaying a katana alongside a complementary shorter blade, such as a wakizashi, which mirrors the traditional daisho pairing in Japanese sword culture. A three-layer stand is best for collectors who rotate pieces from a larger collection, display a full daisho set, or want a visually impactful multi-blade presentation for a wall shelf or display cabinet. Consider the horizontal footprint of the stand relative to your display surface before ordering.
Are the carved dragon and dynasty motifs hand-done or machine-printed?
The decorative motifs on themed stands — including the double Chinese dragon carving, Han Dynasty totem, and blessing character designs — are hand-carved directly into the wood surface, not printed, painted on, or applied as a decal. Hand carving creates three-dimensional relief with visible depth and tool mark character that distinguishes artisan work from automated production. Because each stand is worked individually, minor variations in carving line depth and spacing are expected and are considered part of the handmade quality rather than a defect. These carved stands are particularly well-suited to collectors who display swords with historically or culturally themed fittings, as the motifs create a cohesive visual narrative across the entire display.
How should I maintain a hardwood sword stand over time?
Solid hardwood is naturally resilient but benefits from basic environmental management. Keep stands away from direct sunlight for extended periods, as UV exposure can fade lacquered finishes and cause surface checking in the wood grain over time. In dry climates or heavily air-conditioned spaces, occasional application of a light furniture wax or natural wood conditioner on unfinished surfaces will prevent the wood from becoming brittle. Dust the stand regularly with a dry or very lightly dampened cloth rather than wet cleaning, and avoid placing it in rooms with high humidity fluctuations, which can cause wood to expand and contract. Lacquered stands require no conditioning but should be wiped clean promptly if sword oil or polishing compounds make contact with the surface.
Do these stands work well as collector gifts?
Hardwood sword stands are one of the more practical and visually impressive gifts for a sword collector because they serve a real display function rather than sitting unused. Carved-theme stands — particularly the dragon and dynasty designs — read as deliberate, artistically considered gifts rather than generic accessories. For collectors who already own swords but have not yet invested in proper display hardware, a quality stand is a genuinely useful addition. Pairing a carved stand with a sword from a complementary collection, such as our Natural Wood Saya Hamidashi range, creates a cohesive gift set with consistent material and aesthetic themes. Multi-tier stands are especially fitting gifts for collectors known to own more than one piece.

Two very elegant sword stands - photo shows the double but the single is also excellent. Both pieces are simply constructed of very pleasing wood, assembly was easy and took only a minute or two. I am very happy with both these pieces and would recommend them. They may have been designed for katana, but I use them exclusively for Chinese dao and jian swords, and they are perfect for these.
